This error message is not supposed to be there.

Did you :

enter the correct password ?
Do you use ubuntu ?
Can you use "su" on your system ?
Try to start lttctl from the command line, as root, instead of the GUI.
make sure ltt-control.ko is loaded if configured as a module.
